The Copeland Center for Wellness and Recovery will be hosting a WRAP Facilitator Training in sunny San Diego, CA on January 24-28, 2011.

Spend five days with Copeland Center staff learning to become an effective Mental Health Recovery Educator and WRAP Group facilitator. At this training, you will gain a deeper understanding of the recovery process and learn to:

• work with people to help them uncover their personal strengths and discover how they can use these strengths to support their recovery and wellness

• effectively share the key concepts to recovery: hope, personal responsibility, education, self-advocacy, and support

• work with individuals and groups to develop a Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP),

• teach about wellness tools and strategies

• empower and motivate people to work toward recovery – feeling the way they want to feel, making their lives the way they want them to be, and moving toward meeting their life goals

• use interaction and presentation styles and strategies that enhance recovery

Thousands of people across the United States and around the world have trained as Mental Health Recovery and WRAP® Facilitators. These people are changing the mental health system to honor people’s recovery journeys. This course models the behavior of a facilitator in a WRAP class and stresses authenticity and unconditional high regard, as well as a strong set of values and ethics to guide your work.

This training is appropriate for anyone who would like to lead Mental Health Recovery and WRAP® groups, work with others to develop their own WRAP and to give presentations on mental health recovery related issues to groups or organizations. Attendees are expected to have a solid working knowledge of WRAP and share their experiential knowledge of how WRAP can work.

The WRAP® Facilitators course is an experiential learning environment based on mutuality. Participants in this course will be expected to participate in interactive learning activities and demonstrate their own experience with WRAP. Before attending the seminar, it is expected that you have familiarity with the different parts of WRAP through completion of one of the following prerequisites:

Copeland Center Correspondence Course,

2 or 3 day Seminar I Course or Workshop,

8 or 12 week Seminar I workshop or WRAP Group

Additionally, you should also have and use your own WRAP, or assisted and supported another person in developing and using their WRAP. All Seminar I prerequisite course must be conducted by a WRAP Facilitator.

You will gain a deeper understanding of the recovery process and learn to:

• work with people who have mental health challenges to discover the  strengths they have and can use to enhance their recovery;
• effectively share the underlying concepts necessary to recovery: hope,  personal responsibility, education, self-advocacy, and support;
• work with individuals and groups to develop a Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP),
• teach about wellness tools and strategies;
• empower and motivate people to work toward recovery – feeling the way  they want to feel, making their lives the way they want them to be, and  moving toward meeting their life goals;
• use interaction and presentation styles and strategies that enhance recovery.

This course models the behavior of a facilitator in a WRAP class and stresses authenticity and unconditional high regard, as well as a strong set of values and ethics to guide your work.

This training is appropriate for anyone who would like to lead WRAP groups, work with others to develop their own WRAPs, give presentations on the different parts of WRAP to groups or organizations, and people who would like a framework to become superb facilitators. However, it is not a beginner class on WRAP. Attendees are expected to have a solid working knowledge of WRAP.

It is a best practice to have taken the Correspondence Course, attended a WRAP group, have your own WRAP, or have experience with Mary Ellen Copeland’s work.

Irish Mental Health & Recovery Education Consortium

Having come to a close on the 31st March 2010, the purpose of the IMHREC consortium was to develop, deliver and evaluate a mental health recovery education programme, using the Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP) approach during the course of 2009. The learning programme was designed to enable its participants to consider and adopt the WRAP recovery principles into their own lives and/or practice in order to achieve their own goals within a philosophy of recovery.

How did IMHREC facilitate the delivery of this Mental Health Recovery Learning Programme using the WRAP approach?

Prior to the project there was only a small number of people in Ireland who use the WRAP approach to support themselves in order to stay well and in control of their own lives. There were even fewer people, known as WRAP Facilitators, who have been enabled to use the WRAP approach to assist people on their recovery journey, so that they can regain control of their lives and stay well. IMHREC were keen to address this by delivering a two stage Learning programme which will seek to develop skills in the use of WRAP in Ireland.

Piers Allott, the Emeritus National Fellow for Recovery at the National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE), and an approved Mental Health Recovery Educator with Mary Ellen Copeland, was commissioned to deliver this programme in three regional hubs in Dublin, Cork and Sligo.

Funding

This project was fully funded by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform under the Enhancing Disability Services (EDS) programme. The EDS programme is managed and administered by Pobal.

Evaluation

The project is being evaluated by a group of researchers from University College Cork, the University of Nottingham, and Trinity College, Dublin led by Dr Agnes Higgins from the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Trinity College, Dublin. The final Evaluation Report will be published later this year and will be uploaded to this site.

Mary Ellen Copeland will present a free webinar, WRAP for Groups on Wednesday, January 20 from 2-3 PM EST. It wasn’t long after the development of WRAP that people began to realize that this simple process that people use to guide their recovery from mental health difficulties could also be used to increase the successfulness and effectiveness of all kinds of groups including WRAP groups, support groups of all kinds including peers support groups, organizations, agencies and even family groups. Developing a WRAP for a group has become so popular that it is a featured activity in WRAP facilitator trainings. In this webinar, Mary Ellen will lead the participants through the process of identifying Wellness Tools that will be helpful to groups and then developing a plan that insures the tools are used when needed — at each session, occasionally, when the group is upset, when things are not going well and even when people are considering leaving the group or the group is considering reorganizing or disbanding,

People who use WRAP on a daily basis to guide their lives, WRAP group facilitators and people who facilitate other kinds of groups, people at all levels of responsibility in organizations and agencies, care providers and family members are encouraged to attend.

CEU’s and certificates are available on request. See all information on CEU accreditation, requests, eligibility, and compliance.

Mary Ellen Copeland of the Copeland Center for Wellness and Recovery will present, Using WRAP to Develop and Keep a Strong Support System. Using the Loneliness Workbook as a guide, she will guide attendees through the process of identifying support related Wellness Tools and then using those tools to build a powerful WRAP that will help them to increase the size and effectiveness of their support system. WRAP group facilitators and health care providers are encouraged to attend as well so that they can share these ideas and strategies with others.

Certificates of participation are available on request.

Many, many of the questions in previous webinars are about issues related to support. In Mary Ellen Copeland’s earliest studies on how people recover from mental health difficulties, “support” emerged as a key concept for recovery. Those studies, the basis for her well-known recovery work of the last 20 years showed that most people felt that everyone should have a support team of at least 5 people, people who care, people who are willing to listen, people who are willing to help when needed, and people who share the joys and sorrows of our lives, people who like to do fun things. Yet many, probably most people, find Developing and Keeping a Strong Support System to be a challenge in their lives. And yet the ease with which we recover seems to be dependent not only on our own resources but on the closeness and effectiveness of our connection with others.

Mary Ellen also found in her research for the Loneliness Book that people who enjoy time alone and who are not always desperate to be with others are less lonely. She will include in this webinar wellness tools and strategies that help people enjoy and appreciate time alone.

This webinar is sponsored by the Copeland Center for Wellness and Recovery where you can get trained to be a certified WRAP Facilitator and Essential Learning, your resource for online WRAP and recovery courses.

Those of us who use WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) know how handy it can be during the holiday season. It can even be helpful if we are not celebrating any holidays at all, but have to be in the midst of other people’s preparations. There can be a lot of extra stress at this time of the year and using “wellness tools” can help keep us on track so we can enjoy the best parts of the season. Baking, singing, decorating, and visiting friends and family are all wellness tools that can make the holiday chores more appealing.

What is our holiday like when it is well? Just remembering the best parts of past holiday seasons can help us remember our goals and coordinate this year’s festivities more effectively. Doing our “daily maintenance plan” (those things we do every day to stay in balance) will help assure us that we don’t get off track and lose our energy or good will. There are also things we might do every day to keep holiday plans rolling along so we don’t get too rushed all at one time.

Identifying holiday triggers can really be helpful so we can immediately counter with positive action plans. For instance, if you didn’t get the holiday bonus you had counted on, you might want to draw names this year, adjust your shopping list, or make some presents.

There are holiday early warning signs. Some obvious ones would be lack of energy, not getting enough sleep, or feeling agitated. As soon as you notice these indications, you can get your action plans into gear, using your wellness tools as a resource to make sure that you get feeling better fast!

The holiday season is a terrific time to exchange favors with your support system. There are probably things they need help doing that might be fun for you to help out with and vice versa. This is also a wonderful time of the year to volunteer. As you reach out to others, that holiday spirit makes every other thing you need to do seem a lot easier.

Even if you don’t write a special WRAP for your holidays, you can remember to pay attention to your regular WRAP. One of the best things about WRAP is that it is excellent for challenges and the holiday season, while it is a lot of fun, also can contain a lot of frustrations. As you are adorning your home with festive decorations, planning holiday events, and wrapping your gifts – don’t forget to WRAP your holiday season, too!
